OK, perhaps you have the cartiridge in the black side, not the color side. Make sure its a black cartridge as well. Some HP printers will allow you to just have the black cartridge installed, and not a color even if there is a bay for a color cartridge. If it doesn't have grayscale, you won't find it. Yours won't have one. It won't have anything that will show any type of color control other than Fast Draft, Normal, or Best. That's why I needed to know which one you had. Try taking out the color cartridge and see if black will work. If no black print is showing, then you probably have a clogged nozzle. You may have to re-install the driver first (after you check if its a black cartridge and whether it is in the correct bay) You can use either one separately if you choose to (black alone and tri-color alone). To do grayscale on your printer, you'll have to take out the tri-color and leave in the black cartridge. Other than that, I don't think you ever see anything referring to grayscale. You have tri-color installed also, correct? with both cartridges in, printing will make the black look slightly different than pure black, but it's ok. If you want just black, remove the color and store it in a ziplock, but don't touch the copper part (head). That's the only way to get only black printing. Comes from the manual.

If you are printing from MS office then follow these steps to print in black and white.
1. Click File in word or excel or ext.
2. Go to print setup
3 In print setup in the tabs find your Pinter.
4 click on preferences or properties by your printer
5. go to print inn gray scale if you can find it.

It is different in every version

IN MS Word in format you can change the color of the print as well as the font and size of font. You may have a hardware problem, though. If format in Word does not help, call HP technical support. They are excellent.

Go to print properties - and mark print in grey scale only.
This will work
