The mean machine is one of my boyfriends favourite films and we watched the longest yard last night - he says the plot is identical. Why is this? Which came first?

The Longest Yard starring Burt Reynolds came first back in the 60's or 70's. In 1998 or 1999 the plot was ripped off by Vinnie Jones and crew and made into a football film called mean machine. Finally in 2005 the remake of the original Longest Yard(American football style) was released starring Adam Sandler, Chris Rock and (of course) Burt Reynolds. Hope that answers your question.
The term mean machine is actually the name given to the team of convicts in all three of these films, although I think Vinnie Jones is implied to be the only "mean machine" in his film.

The Longest Yard was made in 1974 and it's the original AND the best movie! Starring Burt Reynolds, cool flick about a football team of convicts vs the prison guards! Enjoy!

Neither. It is actually based on a film from the 60's? i think. Many variations of the film hae been made, using football (US AND UK), I know there has been a baseball version and cricket!! But, if you are talking about release dates, Mean machine came before The Longest Yard.
