Big Brother was the vanguard. It and shows like Cops and Gladiators (yes, there's a Hicksian line running through this argument) were among the first to lay bare the lowest common denominator of the human spirit before us all and serve it up as entertainment. We stopped whatever we were doing and watched, because part of our brain couldn't believe they had the balls to do what they were doing. We waited for something to happen, something - ANYTHING - that conformed to our previous ideas of entertainment. They gave us Nasty Nick, trailer park arrests and overstimulated pituitary glands poking each other with giant Q-Tips. Then they yelled at us like Maximus in Gladiator - "Are You Not Entertained?!" and we felt like the people in the Emperor's New Clothes, too self-conscious not to clap and beg for more.

Then came the rise of Simon Cowell - who perhaps epitomises the idea of Satan's Little helper, here to lower the standards. I raise my hand and say YES, I voted for Will Young. Four times on Pop Idol final night, if only to seal the fate of Gareth "Personality" Gates!

And how the floodgates opened.

Jade Goody. Chantelle. I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. The Apprentice. I actually wasted brain cells on the weekend watching a double-bill straight from Satan's enema-bag - Britain's Next Top Model, and perhaps the most ghastly thing I've experienced yet - "I want to be a Hilton" - The Apprentice for even stupider people.

You notice that the War on Terror only really got going once we'd accepted Big Brother to our greedy little trivia-hungry bosoms? THAT's why we can't stop watching now, man. We know that this is all revolting and that we drop IQ points for every minute we watch, but the real world is now much more scary than we ever imagined it could be, so we wrap ourselves in "reality" TV and kid ourselves we're still in touch with what really matters.

The idea is that you are big brother. It is a curious way of turning everybody into voyeurs. You must like watching other people. Admittedly the games are dumb, but; if they weren't nobody would find them amusing. The real fun here is in getting the public to watch a show that costs little or nothing to produce while generating big dollars in advertisement. The stupid people are the advertisers that pay full price for a show that costs so little.

Could be. I'm truely addicted. Everytime, I think it's going downhill or getting boring they add a new twist it's nausiating!
I do come away feeling clever though (although it isn't hard with Glyn and Nikki in there! and remember Helen, I've never seen anything like her lack of I.Q.)
I reckon it's more likely to be the morale thing, can't wait till it's over because like other answerers mentioned - it stops me being able to consentrate on my college work.
Maybe it's a plan to keep the minds of it's key audience's (student's, gay's, bored housewife's and teenager's) occupied so that we won't join together riot and create a brave new world?

Yes of course the government is sending out subliminal signals
through reality TV shows like Big Brother.
If it is possible block the show out or turn of the TV & play a card or board game & maybe get some fresh air.

Yes, and the television is only one means of lowering the general public's intelligence level. The network moguls are still using the out moted thinking that the public doesn't have an opinion of their own and will watch anything.....Turn off the TV, get off the computer, read, and socialize with people whom you can have deep conversations with. Think and beware the addictions to stupid humor.

Heh...Big Brother is already watching us!! Take a look around next time you go out....you'll see those security cameras everywhere!!
In fact, the other day I had lunch in a upscale restaurant and was very much surprised to see a security camera in a corner of the room!! Why would they need a security camera where folks are eating??????

I think you are right as it is the saddest and most boring thing on the planet! I would rather remove nails from a wall with my teeth than watch a reality show, which is rather stupid. Hey Presto! My IQ is lowered!

No. I think it's part of a government plot to boost morale.

Who doesn't watch it and come away feeling like Einstein compared to those ignoramuses?
