Do not try going to sleep to catch up, it doesn't work. Once sleep is lost you cannot compensate. If you are going somewhere where the time difference is considerable, work on their day and night timings. If you arrive in the morning, stay up and then go to sleep their time. It is amazing how quickly your body adjusts.

yes you have been given the answer i would say..
a/ if a short visit..keep your watch to your home time..perhaps set your mobile to that countries time.. if longer visit..obviously best to reset your watch.
b/when you arrive, no matter how tired you are.. stay up & fight sleep . .adrenalin will probably kick in ..unless you working:-( .. and get an early night in their time zone and you will sleep (hopefully) through to their morning.
c/ when you return home.. once again.. try and stay up and survive the day.. and when night time comes, have an earlyish night..when you get home..try and unpack and do your laundry etc/ get organised.. and then when you get an early night.. again hopefully you will wake up in the morning feeling a bit more refreshed. you can and will feel the different effects if east/west travel ie depending if you going + in time or - in time and how many hours! But i do believe jetlag is phsycological.
I have tried melatonin.. i have tried a few drinks etc.. but i don't sleep easily on planes.. also do drink lots of water..keep hydrated.. i wouldn't want to take a sleeping pill .. just in case god forbid i had to be "with it" if something happened.. but perhaps you could take some valium or herbal remedies.

The only way to completely avoid jetlag is to stay on UK time whatever you do. This isn't always possible though - depends where you're going.

get some melatonin in liquid form from a healthfood store. Thirty minutes before you go to bed, take about 4 to 6 drops. Stay up for thirty minutes. After 30 minutes, the melatonin has been absorbed into your bloodstream. Now, just go to bed. You should fall asleep in twenty minutes. This one procedure has just completely reset your inner clock. If you were in Omaha on Thursday, and now it's Saturday and you're in Lausanne, Switzerland, no problem. It's like you've been there for a month.

When you arrive at your destination try to stay up as long as possible (if it is day time) and go to sleep when night time comes. I can never sleep on the plane, so I am exhausted when I arrive, but the adrenaline kicks in and helps me stay awake.
I have found that jet lag might take a few days to hit, so just when I think I have acclimatised I will end up sleeping for about 12 hours, but that is the end of it.
If you are only going for a few days try (if possible) to keep to your 'home' time.

Have a cocktail, take a Melatonin and relax on the plane. This should help you sleep. Once you get to your destination, don't give into your tiredness. Stay up until at least 8 or 9pm - this will help you get into the time of the country you're in.

Get extra sleep ahead of the flight, and have a very light diet. Also avoid any alcohol, fatty food and coffee. Drink instead plenty of water.

I went to the US and Canada last year, and can never sleep on planes. The only advice I can give is to have a sleep at the other end and try to adapt to the timezone you're in as quickly as possible.

when u get to your destination, have a light meal then sleep for 2-3 hours, then when u wake up carry on ur activities as normal. then when you feel tired, take a nice long sleep for 8-10 hours.

I have found no way to avoid it but, afterwards I firmly believe in walking barefoot on soft carpet, I know that's what the guy said in Die Hard but it worked for me.
