get something that is small but rough and tumble since you have 2 boys (the yorkie or chihuahua are too fragile)
also take into consideration whether it will be inside or outside dog, is your yard fenced? do it before you get pup, you also need fence for children

The mistake most people make when choosing a pet is what the animal will be used for..Utility dogs for example are great pets depending on witch breed.. obviously a bull mastif has one application a Blue healer another a Sheepdog still another...NO MATTER what you choose in dogs you can NEVER allow a dog to alone with small children.. if you do not understand why they you are NOT a dog person..They have a psychology all their own..and they differ greatly from dog to dog and breed to breed.. A pitbull a utility dog will be VERY different than a JRT..both are great fun dogs, but you MUST concider the application and conditions..

The first pet you should get for them should be a dog. I wouldn't get a big dog, since that will come to dominate all of your lives with the need for care and attention. Smaller dogs are great pets. If I were you, I would consider a chihuahua or a Yorkshire terrier. They have lots of personality and are usually great with kids if you get them as pups. They also make great watchdogs if all you want is an audible alarm.

How about a rabbit? Your kids can help look after it and it is less likely to harm the baby than a dog or cat.

Seeing as they are young, it is tough. My kids had hermit crabs as young ones and they never hurt them. As long as you can provide adequate supervision, a medium sized dog could be a good choice. Labs are really good around kids.

as someone that's grown up with dogs all my life, it might be my suggestion...get a puppy, a breed with a reputation for being good with children, and let them all grow up together...
