Why are American teenagers so worried about what they wear on their first day of school?
I haven't noticed this in the UK, but it seems that many young American men and women are too focused on how they look at school.

Why is this so?

Commercialism. That is what is wrong with Christmas or any holiday. I wish all schools had uniforms, it would be cheaper and no one would feel inadequate.

America has made us shallow and self serving. We have everything that anyone could want and those of us who don't are being judged by those who do. There always standards here. I will say that Americans who don't abuse drugs have better teeth than those in the UK, why is that? Do people in the UK have dental insurance or is their a shortage of dentists? Hehe...no really there is a good percentage of Americans that have way too much time on their hands to worry about that kind of sh!t...but it's not just here, it happens everywhere.

Probably because all school pupils in the UK look the same as its in the law for schools to wear some kind of uniform. So that kinda eliminates the need to worry about what to wear.

It's this classification through image thing
it has become all about the look
substance is just naturally expected to be somewhat nill
but the look is everything--I mean --if you want to BE somebody
you have to LOOK the part whether you are or not
We have several decades of media to thank for this one

In America, image is everything. Kids want their clothes to match their ideas of themselves or to at least complement them so that others will think a certain way about them when in reality, kids are only thinking about themselves and merely comparing themselves to others which is why kids care so much about how they appear because they wish to appear superior which is one of the few ways for them to earn respect among their peers.
