I want to make sure that my original files stay mp3, and not automatically convert to the itunes format. I want to be able to copy only the songs i want into a separate file, and convert those to itunes format., faving my original. is this possible?

In itunes.......click>>edit>>>preferences>>advanced tab then under the general tab uncheck "copy files to itunes music folder
Then click the importing Tab and make the importing music MP3 encoder ,,,,Setting "good quality 128kbps
Then click on the burning tab and select and select maximum burning speed and mp3 for your disc format

although i tunes have mpeg4 and acc files you can right click and convert to mp3
the setting you are putting on will mean that itunes will not copy your music into the itunes folder. all this means is you will not be able to get click advanced and select get track names,, but if you have media player you will get the info plus album art there.
always look at the settings on any software. Media player and itunes are just battling for your custom. personally i prefer media player 10 but i also have i tunes so i can rip my friends ipod

good luck if your stuck use F1 help and type in a word relevant to your problem
