yes, they were called "the boxcar children," the first books was kind of yellowish, and had a picture of henry and jessie and violet and benny and whats-his-name, the dog on the front cover, and they lived with their grandfather, and they could ride their bikes wherever they wanted to go whenever they felt like it...i remeber there was one about a purple pool and one where someone broke into their house and left muddy footprints all over the floor....my neighbors and i used to play "boxcar children outside on out deck...we would make food out of plants and dirt and stuff, and we always founght over who got to be violet...my little sister still reads them, i think....she's 13 years younger than i am.

I definitely wanted to live in a boxcar after reading those! I thought that was so cool. But, anyway, I don't think they're being made anymore...but even if they are...they're not the same quality. I think something happened where the original author died and someone kept writing using her name...? I know that happened with Nancy Drew, but for some reason I thought it happened with The Boxcar Children, too. Man, that series was the best.

I totally remember that series and I still find it so cool that a group of kids could live so well in a boxcar. It made me want to travel the country in a train just to see if I could do the same. I dont think they are still being made, they it would be nice if they were.

I do, I loved them. There was just something about these kids who were so self-sufficient they could live on their own.

Gertrude Chandler Warner only wrote the first 18 or so of them. I can remember when they first made them available in paperback, sometime in the early '90s - and then had someone write more adventures after they'd gotten through the ones that were already written.

I do. The first book told the story of four orphans (Henry Alden, 14; Jessie Alden, 12; Violet Alden, 10; and Benny Alden, 5) whose parents died. They were to live with their grandfather, but were afraid. Because of this, they find an abandoned boxcar to settle in instead.

I remember them well! For 2 year straight, my grandmother made sure I got a few of them in my stocking for Christmas. They were all different colors, and for the stories to be written so long ago, they were really good! soph_the_soph, I think you are right and that after I think the 12th or 13th book, the original author died, and other people wrote more books using the characters. Thanks for the memory!
