The term was first used by an Englishman, named Robert Smith in the 1870s.
It doesn't mean literally "raining acid," rather that rainfall is more acidic than normal due to air pollution ... mainly from coal-burning.

I don't know when the term was first used, or who
first used it. However, since rain is normally some-
what acidic, due to dissolved CO2 and other
substances naturally occurring in the air, the use
of the term can only refer to rain that has a greater
than "normal" acidity.
Besides human produced pollutants there are
naturally occurring substances that can cause
acid rain. Volcanic eruptions put large amounts of
acid forming chemicals into the air.

well acid rain means that the water that is coming down on us has an acidic pH and can corrode stuff.
The acidic part is formed by too much carbon dioxide dissolving into the water that is to be rain.
So the less carbom dioxide we emit and the more trees we have, the less cases of acid rain there will be.

im not sure cause i forgot, but il tell you,
acid rain has sulfur dioxide(i guess) and the other one i forgot, which is an acid which can destroy monuments and etc. it pour to the sky so that means that it is a rain with the acid, so they call it an acid rain.
sorry, i almost forgot everything about that so i make my own words and ideas.
