They aren't jailed for multiple wives, because most of them are smart enough to not get more than one marriage certificate. They legally marry their first wife, and then have another ceremony to marry the other wife without bringing the law into it. The ones who go to jail are usually busted for criminal non support of their children - if they have 20 kids on welfare - or for being married and having sex with 14 yr old girls.

No particular moral reason, I guess. This is how the law is.
This law depends on the country, state and time. Plus, law in the old times was always biased in such a way that it's OK for a married man to have a lover but it's not OK for a married woman to have a lover.

It is just way to simple...
You have to pay for a marriage license and pay for the tests etc to be married.
But the law states that you can only be married to one person so if you are not paying the State for the priviliges then it is illegal...
You don't have to pay for any of that to have multiple sex partners.
But as soon as the Government figures out how to tax, charge or require a fee for it then multiple partners will have laws on it too.

A polygamist commits a crime as he is entering under a legal mariage contract with more than one person, and in doing that is breaking the law which says that one can only be legally married to one person at a time.
An adulterer is not breaking the law, only morality; having sex is not a legal contract.

Adultery is still illegal. In the United States, laws vary from state to state. For example, in Pennsylvania, adultery is technically punishable by 2 years of imprisonment or 18 months of treatment for insanity (for history, see Hamowy). That being said, such statutes are typically considered blue laws, and are rarely, if ever, enforced.

Marrying more than one woman is against the law....it's pretty much considered fraud or bigamy. Having an affair hasn't made it into the law books, but you can lose everything in a divorce by cheating.

The law cares not how many sex partners you have. Having multiple wives has implications with regards to insurance, inheritance, taxes, etc.

That is because the legal system is no longer biblically based. I believe that both are terribly wrong, and there should be harsh penalties for both. I guess that the government just thinks that marital faithfulness is less important than legal documents.

Punishment comes in other forms for an unfaithful man...maybe he'll get AIDS? Or maybe his wife finds out about his affairs and chops off his john?
