make sure you eat a healthy breakfast and drink orange juice-this will help prevent you from becoming lightheaded and dizzy after donating..

whole wheat or toast with grains in it works really good for getting your fiber in.
red meat (steak, hamburger, pot roast, etc) green leafy veggies (salads are great),and beans are all great sources of fiber.....

be sure to bring along something to drink afterwards-your body will need to replenish itself. avoid sodas or anything w/caffeine in it...water,juice or gatorade will work best

Red meats, organ meats, dark green leafy vegetables are all high in iron, but honestly, if you are a normal healthy person, you'll hardly notice anything different after donating. I even played a few rounds of volleyball a few hours after donating once...of course, I was a bit younger then, LOL. In fact, if you get into a routine of donating regularly your body actually gets more efficient at producing blood.

High protein (meat!), green veggies are the most important things. Make sure you're nice and full, and drink TONS of water during the 24 hours before you donate.

Beef liver is high in iron, liver paste, blackstrap molasses, all are high in iron. If this is distasteful to you then at least take a multivitamin and cover all your bases.

I thank you for taking the time to consider what you do with yourself before giving blood. I wish all people were as considerate like you.
My hubby needed blood during his transplant...I will now think of it as a sacrifice from a person like you. Thanks so much for caring about others you might never meet!
