I am asking whether divorce laws or anything similar apply ot assests (propety etc). Or is it left to the two people concerned to sort it out?

It depends on how long you were together. If it's years, you might be common law married depending on your state and divorce laws would apply. In general, it's up to the couple to sort it out if they weren't married.

if you are NOT married and living together everything in the house according to law has to be divided. Bank accounts in your name remain yours. Only stuff inside the house MUST be divided.
The key to this is if you are leaving your "housemate/partner" and you want to get the better of them. Just take most of the stuff anyway as the law has no idea what was inside the house in the first place unless receipts are kept.
If you both own the house i mean half share and you want to sell . Your Ex partner has the right to buy your share first , if they dont want to then you can put the house up for sale , take your share and give them the rest.

It depends in which state you reside and the laws there regarding common law living arrangements. You really need to consult an attorney.

depending on the state law where you live, but most states honor palimony suits where judge will rule pretty much along the same lines as marital divorce. like splitting all assets acquired while together.

If your not married then only common sense should dictate how you split up your possessions.
