Brand names meant branded stuff. To live "brand names" life could be that a person buys all the branded stuff for their usage and everything around them are all branded.

it's related to the American cowboy west. People would brand their cattle, with branding irons, right? Circle K ranch, Lazy L ranch, Bar S ranch, Bar B Q ranch (the ranch in Texas that held large outdoor cookouts and invented barbeque sauce). So ranchers would identify their cattle by saying "that's my brand" and there it would be. It just sequed naturally into "brand names".-
