I like a friend who is somewhat like me but not exactly like me. Still, I like it when we enjoy the same type of activities to do together and probably have similar values. I also like a friend who will speak his or her mind but when doing so, knows enough to pull back if I become threatened by that type of thing. Quite frankly too, I respect a friend's privacy and I like him or her to respect mine -- but there comes a point where people have to open up a little, show some reciprocity, and self-disclose -- and of course I don't mean acquaintances or casual friends here, or perhaps even most close friends, but really close friends or best friends should exhibit some mutual self-disclosure so trust can be built up between them. When I've self-disclosed and then a friend who has hinted at doing so himself or herself does not follow through, a little red flag goes off in my head and the friendship suffers.

I agree pretty much with everyone else's answers, but I also think that there is no real answer. You meet someone at work, school, the gym, etc., start a conversation and seem to like each other and get along. Most of my friends were met through other people I was friends with. While I would not want to be friends with someone who is dishonest or not a nice person, I don't go around with some kind of checklist, and don't think having a checklist like that is a good idea. You may miss out on gaining a good friend who doesn't happen to meet every requirement on your list.

A friend has to be trustworthy,
A friend must know how to share
A friend is always understanding
Who you can seek for care.

He forgives when you do wrong,
He's honest with his words
But he'll keep his mouth shut
When he know they'll hurt.

He respects you for who you are
He won't talk behind your back
He has a good sense of humour,
To make you smile and crack!

Just a five-minute poem I wrote for you. :)

Sincerity -- it explains everything. It makes a person regardless what his personality triats are called a friend.
