David Beckham could have been great as a squad player, if he would have accepted he was a substitute and his role was to coach the younger ones who have more dribbling skills and pace how to cross the ball, and help the team gel.

He was right in trying to move to central midfield, because that's where fitness, hard work, and an ability to pass the ball accurately over any distance would have best been used. However, he doesn't have enough of a footballing brain to see the passes often enough, yet.

I think what might also have played on McLaren's mind are the rumours of sponsors insisting that certain players play; by dropping Beckham, he is making sure these sponsors cannot influence the team sheet as much; not even in the squad, so...

Furthermore, McLaren is preparing for the future; at most Beckham could have lasted until Euro2008, WC2010 is definitely a step too far; might as well start with the rebuilding now.

McLaren has to show that this is a new regime and David is the old regime so there was no option but to drop him. It will be interesting to see how the new team works as these are only friendly matches it does not matter too much. Hope it is not the last of beckham as he is class but he is older and maybe cannot last the pace of 90 mins maybe he will become supersub and get his 100 caps that way

I'm not a huge football fan and therefore wont give a biased opinion. I watched the world cup but that's as far as i go. i like our national team to do well and support them in tournaments but i don't give a fcuk about the league.

I think Beckham should still be in the squad. he is a talented and gifted player who is one of the best ball crossers in the world. he scored in the world cup and set up other goals too.

I don't understand how Beckham can go from being captain of our team to not even being called up.

I think Mclaren is making an example of Beckham and just dropping him to make a name for himself and let everyone know that he is the new boss (as if we didn't know).

I think McLaren has made a bad mistake.

McLaren is building for the future not the past. He is building a squad for four years time, not necessarily the best squad for today. In four years time Beckham will be past his best.

From another point of view though, Beckhams wealth of experience will be lost to the younger players in the England squad.

I think McLaren's decision is more to do with making his mark than any particular failing of Beckham's.

Don't get me wrong, I've been a critic of Beckham's in the past - he's a showboater who believes his own publicity and can't beat a man for toffee etc.

But he's good with a dead ball and if he sticks to wide play and increased his pace half a yard could still be a very useful player. It was his showbiz lifestyle that annoyed Fergie, otherwise he'd still be at Man U, and a better player for it. So, in the final analysis, blame Posh!

YAWN what number situations is this question going to be requested the info are he can no longer play ninety minutes for England as he verified contained in the cup he's not playing adequate first crew football he is going to play football in a minor league he's more effective interested in his commercial artwork now his performances at present were reliable for Madrid yet can he keep on all and distinctive replaced into calling for him to be dropped after the international cup fiasco and his Madrid style has particularly a lot continuously been consistent and robust i'm no longer completely anti Beckham if he were to be said as up he should be a bench participant in straightforward words it is going to likely be a shame if he can no longer get to 100 caps after being so close to he remains a good passer and set piece participant yet I actually have intense reservations as to his health

Nobody can play forever and hopefully McLaren is looking to the future and building a team of younger players. Lennon is one such player who will do as good a job as Beckham and for many more years.

Beckham wasn't performing at the time and McLaren deliberately dropped him so he could work his way back into the team to prove he is better than the rest.

McLaren was spot on but he was wrong on the captaincy though. Stevie G would make a much better driving force. As for David, he can now focus more on his advert/media appeal and ring in the bling blings. Besides his football skills are limited to crosses and free kicks.
