I've been on hydrocodine for about a week now because of a wisdom tooth extraction. I haven't had a bowl movement since I started taking it. Is the medicine keeping me from going or is there some other problem? And also, what can I do to end this pain in my stomach that I can't release?

Yes, it's from the medication. Try the Senokot, take the hydrocodeine for your dental surgery for relief and after you're healed up, you'll go back to normal.

Yes, the medication is constipating. You can take laxatives or eat more fibre and all that but then you are still waiting another couple of days for relief.

Just take an enema and get it over with quickly. If you have been constipated that long, I'm not sure if one of the Fleet enemas would do it. You may need to take a couple or you could use the old hot water bottle/syringe and take about 2 quarts of water and that should do the trick.

Good luck.

Codeine will constipate you. Go to the druggist and get a suppository or two to clean you out and then be sure to eat more fiber. Lots of fiber, I eat 1/3 cup of oat flakes as in Quakers Oats, plus 1/3 cup of wheat bran, 1/4 cup of ground flax every morning and have not problem with my pain killers that I have taken for years. You could eat a cold cereal like "bran flakes' instead. This is not a big problem as long as you look after it. Eat lots of apples if you don't want to eat the oats etc.

yes, the pain killer in hydrocodone is linked to constipation. You might want to ease up on the usage of it if it is bothering you that badly. if your extraction is just a routine tooth pull, i don't really see the need for hydrocodone anymore...your pain should be pretty much gone after a few days...but if it was actually oral surgery, you might want to talk to your doctor about getting you a stronger pain med that you take fewer of...but if you dont want to go through all of that, just ask your doc if taking pepto bismol will interfere with the pain killer and go that route. whatever works. hope you feel better :-)

yes it's the painkillers causing the constipation...

drink lots of water and increase your fiber intake (green leafy vegetables, salads, and prune juice will help alleviate the constipation)

you can also take colace-it's found over the counter at any drugstore

take 1-4 of the 50mg tablets or 1-2 of the 100mg tablets daily. take 2 of the 50mg ones every 4 hours or 1 of the 100mg every 4 hours. take w/lots of water...

you should start to feel better in 3-4 days. take these as long as your using the pain meds or the constipation will return....

As with most prescription medications, taking Hydrocodine may have side effects. They may go away during treatment. They include dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, constipation, nausea, or vomiting.

You are best to report this to your doctor an dstop taking it - if you can change to another painkiller that might be better - you also might want to take a laxative to help you on your way!!

Yes, they cause constipation because the muscles don't care anymore. Stop taking painkillers and start drinking. Then stop drinking. I went through this with a back operation years ago.

It was so bad I nearly went to the emergency room twice. Then I realized it was the pain meds. They shut the muscles down including the colon. In addition they divert water from you GI to the source of the pain. Stop the pain killers and drink. If you are a Baptist get a waiver from God.

I would call the doctor and find out what they reccomend, but yes, this is completely normal.

I was on morphine for 7 years, and was CONSTANTLY constipated... I took Ducolax. It helped greatly.
