It is not being kept clean enough and has gotten infected. She needs an anti-biotic ointment now. Clean it with peroxide, anything else will hurt her.

I took my first baby to the doctor in a rush because the umbilical cord had a bad smell. The doctor very gently told me that it was rotting flesh and you wouldnt expect a great smell. If you are in doubt see your doctor but it was normal in my case. For all the people who said to put alcohol, etc on the stump, the standard now is natrual umbilical cord care. You do nothing except keep it dry and wait for it to fall off.

No, it's not. It sounds like she/he may have an infection. Take her to the doc ASAP. One thing that's pretty common, is people not keeping them dry enough. My sons' pediatrician said no baths, no lotions around there, and not to put him in onesies, as it keeps air from getting to it. So once you get her/him the once over, make sure to follow whatever directions you're given. My doc told me to pull on it very gently to expose the base, and wipe it with alcohol at every changing. It bothered me to do that, but I did and everything is fine.

When it gets to the smelly point, it's close to dropping off. Just keep the pus wiped clean with peroxide or alcohol. It's normal.

My daughters did this too and it can bleed slightly too, i took her to the record Probly 3 situations over it. when I took her in, he positioned this cotton swab with something on it, won't be able to keep in recommendations the call of it tho...the medication freeze/burned it to assist out the approach. I actually have also heard it truly is a reliable theory any more effective at present to bathe it with alcohol, meant to bathe it with warmth soapy water? may look at it
