Yes--definitely. A German mathematician named Leibniz actually published a paper on calculus before Newton. Newton was first but his papers weren't published until after his death. Leibniz's (may not be spelling that right) work was unrelated to Newton's. Since calculus is the key to working out the orbits of the planets, it's certain that someone would have figured it out with Leibniz calculus. During his life, Newton didn't explain how he figured it all out. That wasn't revealed until his post mortem publication.

Certainly. He had been working on it for a while before the whole apple tree incident. But when he saw the apple, he realized that the moon might just be doing the same thing...falling towards earth. So it helped speed up his theory.
