Neither scared me...I laughed at the Exorcist...geez, what an overrated, lame flick...at least the Shining had some atmosphere visually, not to mention Jack Nicholson...never again was able to watch Carson on the Tonight Show without flashing back...but grinning wide

The Exorcist was boring, sorry... personal opinion there.
The Shining was some of Stephen King's best work. If I had to choose between the two, I'd say the Shining.

I personally thought that the shining had more scary moments in it. Stanley Kubrick really did an outstanding job, he delved into the very depths, of the human psyche and showed what isolation really could do to a person with a fragile state of mind
As for the the exorcist....pah...who wouldnt mind being possesed by the devil occasionally.

Then the Exorcist, now The Shinning. It held up better over time, not entirely the Exorcist's fault, since special effects have come such a long way.

I think the exorcist was by far the most scary movie. I was unable to even sleep in the same room as the book when I was a kid and saw this movie.

The Exorcist was scariest for it's day, but I liked The Shining..all that blood creeped me out...but Jack Nicholson made it bearable to watch, with his his drole sense of humor. I liked the visuals, too; the massive hotel and the isolated snow-bound feeling really put you there.

The Shining was a pathetic movie.
By the way, it was filmed up at Timberline Lodge here in Oregon, for any Oregonians who may read this & didn't know that.
I've never seen the Exorcist.
