yes you can lower it w/out medication...

make sure to exercise regularly for at least 30 mins each day-even walking will help-anything that gets your heartrate up.

stay away from fried, fatty and over sugary foods-these will increase your cholesterol levels

things such as oatmeal, cheerios, fresh fruits and vegetables and red meat (but not too often) are all good at lowering cholesterol. chicken and fish work best as far as meat goes.

eat 3 healthy meals a day and two small snacks in between meals. drink plenty of fluids (try to avoid sodas and alcohol).

if you maintain a healthy lifestyle-you should start to notice a difference within a few weeks

Eat Oatmeal everyday, take Fish oil suppliments and get more garlic in your diet.
Now the Garlic WON"T lower your cholesterol, but it will help promote a healthy HDL cholesterol level.

Oatmeal can help lower your cholesterol and the fish oils can aid by replacing LDL with HDL's.
Also, watch what kind of oils you use to cook. Canola and olive oils are free of the bad fats and only have good fats which can help promote GOOD cholesterols.
