Harsh words never bring home the bacon, so tell him he is in danger of being cut off unless he changes a whole lot, and mean it.

say the harsh reality and the consequences to his face without mincing words ..using harsh words will make such a person more defensive so instead of facing it with a right attitude they'll try to cover it up more.
