Telecom companies merge due to various reasons - I am not sure what angle you are looking at. But there are several reasons that come to my mind

1. Big companies buy small companies over - to reduce competition and hit the next closest rival
2. Bandwidth issues - A merger would ensure both companies enjoy the benefits of the limited Spectrum
3. Reach more market - when market is limited to geographical areas - to widen the market which could include overseas operation
4. Specialisation - A company in to wired (fixed line)telecom provisioning could buy a mobile operator. CDMA operator could buy a GSM operator or vise vsersa.
5. Governmetal Issues - to have more bargaining power with the existing government of that country if the rules and regulations are too much.
Thas all I could think of !
