Try thrift stores, consignment shops, flea markets, yard sales, classified ads of people selling an old dress, eBay, etc...
For something crazy, look into dresses that aren't necessarily prom. There are full length dresses that aren't marketed for prom that you may like. If you are looking for a specific style, like goth, try your local stores that sell that kind of clothing. There is no rule that says you have to buy a dress from a traditional prom store.
A word of advice, it's still a school function, so there are still teachers and/or adults that chaperon. You may be asked to leave if you show up in something totally inappropriate, like a dress that's too revealing, has obscene content, or something. Don't get a dress if you can see your nipples through the material or a pot leaf on the front of it.

Look for a retro clothing shop in your area...or put an ad in your paper looking for used prom dresses. I guarantee you'll get some hot offers of classic looks that no one else in your school would dare wear.

Aardvarks (thrift store) has some really awesome unique clothes. But what I think would be pretty cool would be to buy a short classic dress, but add on a bunch of stuff to it like chains, rhinestones, maybe splatter fabric paint all over it. I love customized clothing, because that way it is completely original. =)

Go to a Hot topic its a store for emo people or metal people basicaly for both,,thats were a freind of mine got hers unless they don't sell dresses the one she went to did!!!

try betsey johnson. her dresses are always fun and unique. or you can even go to your local thrift shop or flea market. i know a couple of people who did that, got it tailored and even made their own touches so that they wouldnt see 4 other girls with that same dress. try www.edressme.com. also, accessorize it right and make it your own, thats how you'lls tand out

hi if u really think u should have a dress that no one else have i think u should select a nice cloth first and then stitch its according to your will by a designer !!! belive its or else its works fine for me !!
