After WW I, Britain was given a mandate to control Palestine by the League of Nations. It's mandate covered all of current Israel and Jordan. At the time, this was one single piece of real estate known as "Palestine and Trans-Jordan." When the mandate ended, the region was divided into two countries: Israel and Jordon.

Current Israeli neighbors:

North: Lebanon.
North East corner: Syria.
East: Jordan.
South East: Saudi Arabia.
South West: Egypt.

Hope this helps
