What type of theif is worth the time in AD&D 2nd Edition?

A face? A backstabber? etc. The group that I play with have been playing 2nd for some time in a home brew world and I wasnt sure what type of thief I should make (I only like theives in 2nd, sorry thats how I am), but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

Definitely a backstabber. At higher levels, they can kill stuff in one backstab.
