The best place to look would be the Urban Legend homepage at www.snopes.com. This site has a built in search engine and will give you any and all information available for a particular urban legend.

This is something that has puzzled me for many years. In my teens I heard a story that I later came to recognise as having the theme of an urban legend but which was recounted to me at the time as being completely true.

The theme is that of the "vanishing hitch-hiker" and the story was told to me by a friend, who had been told about it by a friend of hers to whom it had actually happened. He was on his motorbike and picked up a hitch-hiker on one side of the Mersey, getting detailed directions as to where to drop her off on the other side.

She had vanished by the time he reached the other side so, having tracked back through the tunnel to see if he could find her, he went to the address in question, only to be told it was the first anniversary of her death in a motorbike accident!

The friend who told me this story is definitely not the gullible kind and described her friend in turn as being a complete sceptic. It was a number of years later that I first encountered the concept of urban legends.

"There are stranger things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio..."

There really was an incident where a babysitter got high and microwaved the baby. It makes me sick every time I think about it.

And yes, it did happen. It was on a documentary on the Discovery channel. They even interviewed the police.

A couple of years ago my Auntie went to Mexico for a brief holiday. Her first morning there she chanced upon a little dog, a Chihuahua. He looked very hungry and kind of beat up. She could not bear to leave him suffering and decided to take him back to her hotel room and clean him up and maybe feed him. Over the course of a the next couple of days my Auntie worked heroically to save her little dogs life, sadly he died. Not wishing to leave him for the maids she decided to take him to a vets office she noticed nearby and ask if they would dispose of the dogs carcass. She arrived there with the body and was informed her dog was in fact a rat.
Sadly the rat was carrying fleas which in turn were plague carriers. My Aunt died weeks later of a hideous death.
Ironically it was not the plague that killed her she cooked her brain drying her hair in the microwave.
