San Antonio is fabulous. I relocated here about a year ago from the Midwest. Cost of living was a good deal lower than the Midwest, but I'm not sure how it compares to Phoenix. Housing is going to depend where in the city you want to live. Upscale apartment complexes are available on the north side of town. Houses are very inexpensive all over town, with rising home values in several sections of the city. Downtown area does not boast much in the way of housing. There is a significant population of retirees, but there are also substantial amounts of young professionals and families. School districts on the north end of town tend to be preferred. Crime rate is variable with the area of the city you live in, and a real estate agent or apartment locator can give you more accurate ideas than I can. There are plenty of options for night life. Being a growing city, cultural events and venues are still being developed, but they show promise. Good luck with making your decision.

I live in the Phoenix area and I would move to SA in a heartbeat if my wife didn't have to stay for one more year with her job....
