Fairs were a place for farmers and traders to sell their goods. They because very popular as a place to buy and/or sell a wide range of goods.They often happened on holidays when people had time off work and could attend, and there ended up being one on pretty much every Christian celebration. Over time due to the large volume of people who would attend to buy/sell they also attracted other people, like entertainers, or whatever people thought they could make money from.
