Can someone tell me, please, what ports in the PC are serial and what are parallel? Is the DB9 port serial or parallel? How about the RJ45? Can someone kindly elaborate?

usb and firewire are most popular on systems manufactured over the last 4 years.

RJ 45 is used for broadband, DSL, and LAN type connections. It has the same shape as its little brother RJ 15 (phone) connector. It is a little wider than RJ 15.

Db9 is a serial port is prehistoric by today's standards. It was used to connect serial printers, serial mouse, and other devices.
It has a wider cousin that was used for joysticks, and some musical instruments. I think this oneis called DB15. Serial transmitts bits of data one at a time, one after the other, in a series (serial ).

The parallel port is much wider than either serial port connectors. This port connection was used primarily for printers aand grew to be the port of choice for other parallel devices, ssuch as scanners. Parallel connections transmit and receive many bits of data at a time. Usually the amount of bits are some exponent of 2.

USB seems to be the standard. The connector can accomadate up to 127 devices.

Serial have 2 rows of pins, 9 total pins, they are smaller and look a lot like the monitor port (VGA port). VGA ports have 3 rows of pins.

Parallel ports are a lot longer (also 2 rows of pins) and have about 30 or so pins. They are primarily used for older printers. They have almost become extinct.

RJ45 is the network port that looks like a phone port on a modem but is a little bigger. CAT5 cable is network cable, it plugs into an RJ45 port.
