Passing cards in the game of Spades?

When you and your partner swap a card at the beginning of a game of spades, what is the convention with respect to the information you are communicating to your opponent?

There are many variations to the game, but unless you guys are going nil or blind nil, a swap is not common rules.

Isnt card swaping done in Hearts not spades? I have never swaped in spades even when going nil
