Its a sad day when our children are writing letters to keep their mothers out of jail-- The best thing you can do is call Lawyer - sometime their first consultation is free and then maybe they can advise you on what you should do next-- Bless your heart

Judges don't normally take letters.

If your mother is a defendant in a criminal trial, they she should get an attorney and the attorney will know how to present the information following proper procedural rules.

If you're talking about giving character testimony for sentencing purposes, then in-person is generally a better idea. But again, her attorney can answer questions about the procedural requirements for a written statement.

This is not an area of the law that people should try to handle themselves. That's why we have licensed attorneys, and why the constitution guarantees the right to counsel in criminal trials.
