It has been noted that as we learn new things, the nerve synapse in the brain keeps increasing. Experiments done on Honey Bees revealed such nature of neurons. So more synapses results in quicker recollection of events, experiences and learning and thus more, intelligence.
Intelligence is a quotient of learning from experience and learning as in memorization and putting it to use at the right time.
Different parts of the brain are responsible for different activities in the body. Some parts are responsible for voluntary coordination of organs other parts are responsible coordination of involuntary activities in the body, other parts are responsible for the hormonal control and still others are responsible for memory.
The way one reacts to a situation or an event is a synchronized function of both voluntary and involuntary activities coordinated with past experiences. This is what is the main reason for difference in intelligence in different individuals. The cerebrum is responsible for this kind of coordination; that is why it is referred to as the seat of intelligence.

Cerebum or rather cerebral cortex as a whole makes us intelligent.
When we say a computer is more intelligent we actually mean it has more processing speed more RAM and so on, no?
So in that analogy lets consider the following-
New information (in form of experiences and facts) gets stored in our cerebral cortex (loosely called as cerebrum) which coordinates with old information in our bodies with interconnections,.. millions and millions of them called as synapses. these interconnections are the reasons that cerebral cortex makes us intellligent,.. means gives us more processing power--for eg. the moment a person gets an input (say a question/situation) the corresponding information is searched via theses interconnections (giving more processing speed to a person).
And with with gyri sulci and all u get space to store information momentarily which helps processing (like getting more RAM!)
