how do you connect to the internet via edge?

I've looked at some information about edge because my cell phone supports it.

My understanding is that you would connect to the internet through a cell phone or a wireless card (like a cellular card, not just a wireless network card), then you can browse the internet on that phone, or connect the card to a computer (usually through bluetooth) and use the device as the modem.

I've done this with my cell phone, but edge isn't available in my area so I have to use a GPRS instead.
