Let a professional do it. It's too complicated opening the laptop. There are many screws and you might damage your computer.

well there are a couple things you have to worry about.
first: make sure that the hard drive JUMPERS are set to "master". This is usually not a problem, and there should be instructions written on the drive itself.
second: it will not boot unless you have installed an operating system on it. Since you are putting in a blank hard drive, I would recommend buying a special hard disk kit that allows you to copy your old hard-disk to your new drive, and then you just swap and you're done!

Make sure your power supply is plugged into the hard drive. Make sure you IDE or SATA cable is connected from your hard drive to your motherboard. Put your windows CD into the CD-ROM and start it up. You have to have a windows installation disk to install windows onto the hard drive before your computer will boot.

go into the dell bio's screen and change the boot config to dvd/ cd reader and boot from the windows setup disk and rest is cake

look how the old one is fitted
replace it with the new one
the same way
go to bios and boot from cd
and install your os

did you load the operating system..(WinXp or some other OS) to the new hard disc? If you are using the new hard disc as slave..did you properly fix or remove the link?
