It seems so unlikely that anyone incarcerated should receive funds to support his failure to avoid landing on a space or drawing the wrong chance card.

That's a popular house rule. Another is putting money paid for taxes and fees, etc., into the middle of the board to be claimed by the person landing on Free Parking. Another is getting $400 for landing on Go instead of the usual $200. Yet another is flinging the board at your sister when she buys the fourth railroad.

You do not receive the money while you are in jail. Also you can only pay the money to get out of jail on you're own turn so I pretty much always pay. The only exception to this is near the end of the game when you can wait a turn or 2 in jail while you are waiting for an opponent to get further round the board (towards your massive row of property!)

EDIT- My apologies just checked the rules and I've been playing the game wrong. It says you can buy and sell houses and collect money for rent!

According to the official game rules, yes. A person continues to collect rent money when in jail.

Having said that, a popular "house rules" version says that people in jail don't collect rent, which gives people an extra incentive to shell out the $50 and get out.

The rule book may say that they still collect while in jail but i have always played where the person in jail does not collect rent while in jail. It makes it more interesting and make them more axious to pay the $$$ to get out.
