If you haven't read the writings of Hermes Trismagistus, you need to do that first...supposedly, this is the "hermes" that all "hermtic" belief systems derived from

Like "shakras" -these principles are designed as a system of meditations to bring the true believer "secret" "hidden" truths, awarenesses, powers, etc etc etc
and like the shakras..........any meditation technique that ultimately leads to self-examination, self-awareness ans personal "betterment"....cant be all bad

These works had a revival during the latter part of the 19th century and into the 20th...they were extoled as "ancient" hidden, secret, esoteric,,,,arcane, magical..."black" magical..even trying to tie Hermes' work(s) with the "necronomicon"...

Hermes Trismagistus's work -in today's mind set-might be better referred to a proto-existential/secular humanistic/"Oriental"-that is...more on the lines of Buddist thoughts that all of us have a "bit" of the godhead in us..

But what you asked about was a "working" understanding...
Like all meditative approaches...you only get out of it what you put into it....

Crowley comes to mind....

I'll be honest I don't have a clue but I do have a website you can check out. It takes adobe reader and if you don't have it they have a link there for the free download. It is worth it.
