Kudos to you for keeping yourself pure.
Sadly, everything in our culture is very "base" oriented. No one takes the time to think, gee, maybe I should be responsible for my own actions. Of course permissive society is no help, either.
Also the fact that "sex sells" in marketing. Sad, but true.

Children are totally innocent and have little or no concept of sex. It has to be learned. Since humans receive about 80% of their information by sight is it any wonder that people soon become highly aware of sex?
It is constantly thrown at us on television, movies, billboards, and even magazines in the grocery store check out lane. You can't even bring home a chicken or a roll of toilet paper without sexy images assaulting your vision. With all that bombardment, what chance do we have to keep our minds off of it? I saw a mom and her 4-5 year old in front of me one day. The little guy was too young to read but he was carefully looking at every magazine in the rack right next to him, and there were some really scantily clad pictures of people there. I complained to the manager that such pictures should not be down where children would see them, they should be over in the aisles with the other magazines, out of sight of the children. I have learned there is one check out lane that has all tobacco products in the lane so that is the one I prefer to go to.
It is honorable that you care about this issue.

Mainly because our species' first impulse from the moment of conception until the dirt is over us is the sexual drive. The drive to procreate, make more babies. It is human nature, that is how we have populated the earth. It is all part of the pleasure drive. Culture has tamed that drive in that most of us can wait until we are in the privacy of our homes to do so, but, it is still there. Even for you, like you said, it is hard. If you want to be celibate, for whatever reasons you may have, then do so, but, if USA's culture gets in the way of that, there are plenty of other cultures in which you could go. Say, a monistary for example?

Damn good question dude! I speculate that like other subjects centered around human existence, sex and sexuality swing like a pendulum. At certain points of our existence sex is center stage and at other points it is not. Currently, we live in a highly modernized society where many humans have time to explore pleasureable activities without fear of missing a meal. So this allows us t to become more and more enchanted with the power of sex.
Should circumstances change, however, we could go back to using sex soley for the passing of genetic material and bringing forth the next generation.

I would guess that propagating our species is probably the second strongest we and other animals have but SELF PRESERVATION is number one. Put your head in a bucket of water and keep it there for a while. Now see if you are thinking about SEX or AIR.

I think you've partially answered your own question - advertisors would have us believe that you need to be oozing sexuality at every moment or you aren't "normal" - young and impressionable people swallow what the advertisors are feeding us

It's because the media has made us so aware of our sexuality.
