if it is just a 6x6 square with no grid lines in it then there is just one but if it is a 6square x 6square grid then there are alot i lost count at 70 but it should be close to that example: 6*6=36 + 3*3=9 + 2*2=4 so now you are at at 49 squares and you will have squares that overlap so the best thing to do is draw a quare with 6 squares on each side and start counting good luck and happy counting

there are 37 squares all in all.
Assuming that your square is a perfect square,
Six columns x six rows = 6 x 6 = 36
Plus the great square that serves as a fence for the 36 square so there are a total of 37 squares.

1x1 grid = 1 (1)
2x2 grid = 5 (1 + 4)
3x3 grid = 14 (1 + 4 + 9)
4x4 grid = 30 (1 + 4 + 9 + 16)
5x5 grid = 55 (1 + 4 + 9 + 16 + 25)
6x6 grid = 91 (1 + 4 + 9 + 16 + 25 + 36)
7x7 grid = 140 (1 + 4 + 9 + 16 + 25 + 36 + 49)

Pondering about your question (and strictly only with it!), there is only 1 (ONE) square since you ONLY said "a 6 by 6 square." you didn't specify if the "6 by 6" was an amount of squares or just the dimensions.
