you sound like you are doing the right thing...but dear please make sure they are the same sex or else you will have many unwanted litters...We had separate 20 and 30 gallon tanks but my sons let them "DANCE" ever so often and ended up with 5 babies total in 3 births....hard to get rid of, but luckily the local library children's room just had a rabbit and piggy pass, so two went there...we had the other 3 until they died...they were cuties!!!!

Here's a site that will help you TONS:

http://www.cavycages.com/

There's a chart on the main page there that shows you the recommended cage sizes for several different "quantities" of piggies. 2x6 sounds big enough for the two, but you might have some space issues if you do have baby piggies when they get bigger. Might want to just stick with two same-sex piggies for now, pregnancy can get a little complicated and expensive.

Also, that site will show you a cool way to make your own cage that is cheap, safe, and healthy for your piggies - using simple square grids you can find at, say, a Bed Bath & Beyond, and coroplast, which you can get at a sign dealership and cut and score yourself. Takes about 20 minutes to put one together and it'll be roomier than a pet shop cage. Here's the website I made for my piggies (I'm a dork) which shows their cage:

Good luck! =)

Yes this is plenty enough space. But once you start them out in a certain type of cage you should always keep the same type of cage. I had Guinea Pigs years ago in a big square glass aquarium and when the glass got a crack in it I bought a wire cage with a wire bottom and even though I used plenty of newspaper on the bottom they didn't like walking around on it so they stayed inside the cubbies they slept in and wouldn't even come out to eat and quickly became sick and died. I'm not sure really if that was the reason or maybe they just caught cold or something else but I just thought I'd share that with you just in case. Good Luck!

Hum, you're so cute.
Girl cavies come into "heat" often and can become cross and snappy when it's their time.
The space seems more than big enough for a pair of piggies. I like the long haired ones, but I'm all for a calm animal over a cute one. All cavies have a musky odor, more piggies, more smell, so I would stick to one and do the "habitrail" plastic kingdom for you piggie.
I got confused when you changed to the dog....clarify that part. If it's should you stop sleeping with your dog when you get a cavy? No, no reason I can see to stop, unless I'm missing something.

I had some guinea pigs that I breed in a space about that size.
As soon as the babes are old enough to sell, I would do so to minimize the stress on the family.
I had some that turned cannibals because they were stressed out over the lack of space.
They are social animals who need their private time alone just like we are.
I too had a dog and a cat when I owned mine, they didn't seem to mind as much as they did the over crowding in the space I had for them to live.

A 6x2 ft rectangle is definitely big enough for two guinea pigs.

I would advise you against breeding, but this is just my opinion. There are many reasons why people would advise against breeding, but the reason I opine against it, is that there are many guinea pigs already waiting for homes.

If your friends want guinea pigs bad enough, the can get ones that have already been born and waiting for homes. If they cannot afford to buy a guinea pig, than they won't be able to afford to care for a guinea pig, thus shouldn't be looking to have one in the first place.

As long as your dog cannot get at the guinea pigs (and doesn't show aggression towards them), and the guinea pigs have been properly introduced to the dog, and are not frightened with him, then I see no reason as to why you cannot continue to sleep with your dog.

Unless you are willing to deal with a lot of vet bills and possibly quite a few piggies on your hands if you can't rehome them all, don't breed. Please, please, don't breed. There's lots of guinea pigs that end up in animal shelters... check petfinder... these need homes!!! You would also need to consider where you would be getting your piggies from, it's very irresponsible to breed two piggies from a petstore as you have no idea what their genetics are like.
There are lots of forums out there... talk to some people who REALLY know their stuff!!

yes the cage is big enough for 2, and as for what size hair? well that is your personal preference and it sounds like you are to busy to get a breading pair. and as for your dog it depends on how old the dog is and if it is aggressive to the guinea pigs and if it can get into the cage or not. also make sure you put some kind of house for the guinea pigs to hide in they like to hide, you can buy them at the pet stores or have your dad make one out of wood just make sure it is thick enough because they will chew it.

Yeah that's enough space for two...some people say that each guinea pig should have a fair share of 2 sq. feet, but then you should try to get a spacy cage because of all the stuff you put in after you buy the guinea pigs...like waterbottle, food dish, salt wheel and stuff like that...

That is plenty of room.

I'd advise you to get two females. It may be easy to find homes for the first litter or two but what about the 3rd + litters?

Then some people will want to keep a baby which do you keep male? He will fight with his dad when sexually mature. Female now dad has mom and daughter to mate with.

Then you will be asking about separating them to keep them from having babies.
