I really don't think it's every really "cured" someone in the whole sense of the word cure. Curing to me means that you had something that affected your health and the doctored cured it.
i think they can "help" ppl with mental issues...but actually physically cure them...no. when someone is mentally F'ed up the only one that can truly cure you..is you. there no pill you can really take...well lord knows they try....but it only numbs the persons mind so they think they are fine (basically it makes them high....and when I'm high..puff puff...everything always seems soo...much better LOL)

The problem with your analogy is that healing the body is, in many ways, simpler than healing the mind.
The mind is far more adaptable than the body, but the forms those adaptations can take to adverse conditions aren't always healthy, and the same conditions can lead to different reactions and adaptations depending on the individual.
In order to treat someone effectively for a psychiatric problem, you can't just look at the symptoms, you have to figure out the root cause - just as every antibiotic is not equally effective for every infection, every treatment for depression (for example) is not equally effective for every form of depression. The treatment for depression caused by childhood abuse, for example, would involve psychotherapy and working through the issues, while the treatment for depression caused by a hormonal imbalance would be drug-based.
Psychiatry is a fairly new medical science and is still learning how to treat - or even diagnose - different disorders. That said, I have two friends who are no longer suicidal thanks to therapy. I'd say that they qualify as successes.

There are certain protocols in psychology for things. Take for example physical abuse. Certain steps are met at a pace that the patient sets. They are flexible. Different things work for different people. The mind is so unique in everyone, one size does not fit all. The bladder might have a few variations from person to person, but it has a basic function and we know how to treat it when it gets infected. The mind has so many functions, and the same thing can happen to two different people, and they will each have different outcomes. Where if you infect a bladder on two different people, you get a bladder infection in both.

Buddhism is an 2,500 year old science of mind, which creates the most sanity in peoples lives who fallow the teaching and the practice.
It starts with teaching the suffering does exist. Then that suffering does have an origin. Then that suffering can be cured. Then that one has to go thru the journey of their own suffering for that cure. These are the four noble truths that the buddha gave for his very first teachings.
That is why it's also called the hardest religion to practice.
Hope this helps.

This question is much like asking the question "Does god really exist?" because, psychology works on those that believe it does. It is simply finding solutions to peoples' problems and helping them achieve a level of mental health, rather than mental illness. The theories are based on genetic formation, neurotransmission, ect. yes, psychology works. It is based on science, and further and further knowledge is being learned at this time in the human genome projects. Good question though...

Without antibiotics, the bladder infection could still go away.
Having said that, a lot of people have their ability to function normally (psychologically speaking) restored through chemical intervention.

Psychotherapy is a way of treating, according to what Irving D.Yalom calls them, 'the devils that bestiege us'. It is a way of treating what drives us away of being fully aware of ourselves. To move forward on to what Adler called self-actualisation is only helped by psychotherapy.

Yes. People who truely care about other people may study psychology in order to understand adn help others but once they are doing a one on one session, they use their own descrtion
(excuse the pun). Sheeit, I went back and read your question again. lost my train-of thought.
