I want to start a band, need help?

I know how to actually start a band, getting the musicians, practicing and all of that. I have been in a few bands, and played a couple gigs. I just moved to a new town, and I found some musicians, and we plan on forming a band. I play guitar, and the other 2 guys play bass and drums. We know that we must practice a lot, and want to do covers and originals. How do we get covers down real good, and what is the best way to work with originals. I write most of the lyrics, and guitar parts. How should we go about turning some lyrics and a rhythm guitar part into a full song. Any tips and advice would be great.

just write songs on the same scale. Play it gor the drummer and let him ad his flavor or you could request a tempo to work with. Be Bass is just an element that follows the base notes of what the guitar is playing. Practice cover songs A LOT because the are fun to play and only fun to listen to if it is right on the money with timeing and everything. good luck man, being in a band is very hard work.

You have answered a good portion of your question yourself. Practice, practice! I have worked with a lot of bands over the years and if you are really serious about wanting to keep taking the band to the next level, you can never practice enough. The best ways to get your covers down is through repitition in listening to the song, breaking it down into each individual instrument, and again, practicing and tieing it all back together. If you have access to the sheet music use it. Original music should be an idea formed within the band and created jointly taking everyones input into consideration. Write everything down and try different variations, eventually it will click. Practice!

I was in a band, but I sang. In my band though, we just wrote all of our own stuff. the guitarists would just sit down and play something and if the measures and the beat went with the rythem of the song, the rest of the band learned their bit that went to the song and we practiced!
