Life is Beautiful (in Italian) is one of the best movies I have ever seen period. It will make you laugh, and cry and all the things that a really good movie will do its so good that you forget that you are reading subtitles seriously if you want to see a foriegn film see this one. Maria Full of Grace is a good one. Motorcycle Diaries is a good one. Y Tu Mama Tambien is a good one but very racy if you know what I mean. Before Night Falls is a good one. I know of a lot more but I can't think right now...and there are some that I am thinking of that I am not quite sure if they are considered foriegn or not lol...but when I think of some more I will let you know :)

Le Roi de Coeur (The King of Hearts) one of the ten best movies ever made (that's only my opinion)
Cinema Paradeso
Il Postino (The Postman)
two films by Lina Wertmueller - both starring Giancarlo Giannini
Seven Beauties
Swept Away
My Life as a Dog (Swedish -available in English or with english subtitles)
Infernal Affairs (all 3 movies) chinese - a cop is planted as a mole in the criminal underground. A crook is planted as a mole in the police department. Each mole is told by both his police boss and his criminal boss to find his counterpart.
Fulltime Killers (chinese)
Strictly Ballroom (australian)
Shall we Dance (japanese version - not the American remake)

There are way to many movies to put on the list you want, but I'm going to forward a guess that you are looking for a guide as to what to rent at the video store, so here's my advice: look for the movies that have won awards. You won't like all of them, but usually if they are so much as featured in American video stores, they have something going for them, or they wouldn't be there. Good luck and happy viewing!

Once were warriors
Based in New Zealand, about the Maori. Focus is on a Maori family. It covers issues such as suicide, domestic violence, alcohol abuse, poverty...
I can't describe this movie with words. I watched it for a psych class, and it left me traumatized at first...now I'm in awe...it's brutal, raw, and it does not even know what sugar coating means.
The domestic violence things are truly traumatizing. They put your body in shock. It's not about blood and gore though at all.
And you can find it at a video store in the foreign flm section. I know that some blockbusters carry it.

Amelie... its a great French film. Came out a couple years ago. The actress from The Da Vinci Code is the star. It's very imaginative and fun. Subtitles, yes, but its worth it!! Check it out

les diaboliques: its in french (of course) but it's a great plot with a pretty crazy end.
to live: it's in mandarin (not sure of the country, but the people look korean/chinese (no offense) but that's what i think. it follows a family through the time of mao zedong, and it's got a really sad ending and sad points to the movie. one kinda funny part, but in the realization of the part, it's actually really sad
