why can't you be like our english rugby. and have it out on the feild without all the padding.just curious.tony uk

Because football players aren't skinny white fags. Not to mention too, seeing skinny white fags run slower because of some lameass injury like a hairline fracture makes the game boring.

As awesomeBill said, the games, despite being very similar, are played at a completely different pace. I would know, I've played both. Football is a series of intense bursts. Rugby is played at more of a soccer pace (but of course, with plenty of bursts mixed in); continuous play with no breaks in between downs. Have you ever seen a rugby player leave his feet to level an opponent? Of course not, because that's illegal. Why? Because without padding, people would die. In football, tackling is all about pounding the other person. In rugby, the key is to bring them down, but still be in position to ruck over and grab the ball. Besides, if football were like English rugby, then it would be rugby and not its own unique sport. Without padding there wouldn't be all the bone-crunching hits and audible pops that make football what it is.

For safety, rugby is a way older game then football, there probably wasn't an option for pads. And also rugby players need the added vision and mobility that goes along with not wearing pads. Football players are also usually bigger and have larger impacts.

I watch both sports. Football has more devastating tackles than Rugby. And the psychological advantage of having protection allows for more intensity.

Because NFL players are twice as large & the nature of American football is more violence oriented the most rugby matches.

The padding is to reduce being injured. I think our football is rougher than your rugby.
