Usually you accumulate 1 sick day a month, if you are working full time. However, that is all you can get, so if you take 1 'sick' day a month, and then get really sick, you can find you've used up all your days.
I seen many companies have policies that require notes from the doctor if you take several days off in a row, or call in sick on Friday, Monday or before/after a holiday weekend (they know people like to extend their days off)

Employers look for reliability and consistency in their employees. When you are hired for a job people rely and count on you. Unless you're sick (not just sick & tired of work), have an emergency, or you truly need a rest, I'd keep the call-ins at a low. How many NBA players take a game off, unless they're on the injured list? There are only a few exceptional players who have never missed a game - John Stockton being one of them.

Well, it depends on how many days your employer give you for the year. For example, we earn sick time kinda like how you earn vacation time. We earn a certain number of hours per pay period ( again just like vacation). But, in total it is suppose to equal 14 sick days for a whole year. And if you have more than two sick days in a row, you need a doctor's note.

In my office, we get 1 sick day per month. They accumulate, but I imagine if I called in sick once a month my boss would begin to get upset. My guess is taht most bosses allow about 6 times a year....

As many days as they give you! If you don't get compensated off time, then whatever you feel you can afford. After all, it's your time, not theirs. Taking a day off to interview might be a good idea as well.
