= 40 / 5 = 8 feet per second
What do you mean by given distance and speed?

Using the formula speed=distance/time, and applying it here:
S=40 ft/5 sec.
S=8 ft/sec.
If you're more comfortable with meters, the speed is:
S=(8 ft/sec)(1m/3.28 ft)
S=2.44 m/sec.
So, whichever you are more comfortable with, the speed is:
S=8 ft/sec or S=2.44m/sec

8 feet per second, or figure in miles this way:
12 x 40 = 480 feet per minute.
480 x 60 = 28800 feet per hour.
28800/5280 = 5.45 miles per hour.
