The Polo name originally didn't belong to a family of explorers, but to a family of traders. Marco Polo's father, Niccolò (also Nicolò in Venetian) and his uncle, Maffeo (also Maffio), were prosperous merchants who traded with the East. They were partners with a third brother, named Marco il vecchio (the Elder).


In 1259, the two brothers lived in the Venetian quarter of Constantinople, where they enjoyed political privileges and tax relief because of their country’s role in establishing the Latin Empire in the Fourth Crusade of 1204. But the family judged the political situation of the city precarious, so they decided to transfer their business northeast to Soldaia, a city in Crimea. Their decision proved wise. Constantinople was recaptured in 1261 by Michael Palaeologus, the ruler of the Empire of Nicaea, who quickly burned the Venetian quarter.[1] Captured Venetian citizens were blinded,[1] while many of those who managed to escape perished aboard overloaded refugee ships fleeing to other Venetian colonies in the Aegean Sea.

Marco Polo was born in Venice, a city in Italy, in about 1254. He was one of the most famous travellers of the history. At the age of seventeen he left Italy with his father Niccolo and uncle Maffeo. In 1275, they arrived at Pakin, the capital city of the Emperor of China, Kublai Khan. They were the first Europeans for hundreds of years to visit the great country of China. Marco Polo became friends of Kublai Khan. He travelled all over China in hos service. After seventeen years in China, Marco and his father wanted to go home, but Kublai Khan wanted them to stay. At last he sent them as ambassadors to Persia and from there they were able to return to Venice. Sailors from another city, Genoa, attacked Venice, and Marco was caught and put in prison. While Marco Polo was in prison he wrote an account of the adventure of China with the help of his friend Rusticello. In that book he discribed the development of China in 13th century. He was the first european to describe a crocodile. The things which are discribed in his book are as follows:
1. An animal with a mouth big enough to eat a man. It looks like a piece of wood ten feet long with big eyes, floating in the river. It has short legs, and long sharp teeth.
2. Rich people take baths inside their homes.
3. Money made of paper.
4. Long wide roads paved with stones.

In 13th century the people of Europe doesn't have any information about that animal which was crocodile. At time in Europe almost all the people use to take bath outside of their house. So it was a amazing thing for Marco to take bath inside their house. In China, Marco saw good paved roads. Roads in Europe in 13th century were probably rough and muddy. In europe at that time there was no paper money.
