My grass is still a little thin after just planting it last summer. My problem is, I want to add some seed this fall in hopes that it will help thicken the already existing grass up some. Do I need to loosen the dirt or just use a broadcast spreader on it. I have over a half an acre and it will be hard to loosen all of the dirt. Any suggestions?

My husband did this to our front yard last fall and merely broadcast the grass seed by hand; and we had a beautiful green lawn all winter...and the next summer our lawn had almost no weeds and was like walking on thick carpet. We plan to do it again to other parts of our yard this fall

Attach an aerater to your riding mower ( assuming you have one) and use it next time you cut grass. Use a broadcast spreader for the new seed. Water the lawn as you normally would. Use a mulching attachment if you have one. This will reduce the ammount of fertalizer you use in the spring.
Happy planting !

if you just planted the lawn last season i would give it another season to grow and get established.a winter fertilizerand some fets this spring should really help and make a noticable differance.by next summer if you are still not happy then reseed.

airate then reseed, this way you wont have to loosen up every square inch of dirt.good luck

Aerate the ground first before spreading the seed, and also spread a fertilizer such as weed and feed or similar. Make sure the ground is clear of leaves before aerating it and its easiest to rent a power aerator than to do it by hand or those shoe-aerators... The aeration allows the ground to breath but also get the seeds and fertilizer into the ground more too...

Throw lawn seed down and cover with hay or straw. Water as usual. The grass will grow up through the hay/straw and it will also work as mulch.
