When the Super Bowl was named, it was not a geographical thing. It actually got its name from a child's toy, a small rubber ball that bounced very high when you threw it, much like a golf ball would. But to answer your question, they call it a "world championship" because the players that play represent the grid-iron football world. Players that play in any other country, if there are any outside of NFL Europe (which is an NFL minor-league system) are playing for the right to play in the NFL.

First of all, it is not called the World Super Bowl!!! It is called the Super Bowl!! As for the NBA Champions and MLB Champions being referred to as World Champions, they are!!! Some people argue that calling the NBA champions or MLB champions - World Champions is inappropriate. I Disagree!!!!! If you have ever watched a NBA or MLB game, you would see that there are players from all over the world!!! The best athletes in the world in basketball and baseball play in our leagues. That's why you can call it the World Series, because there are players from all over the world in it. That's why the NBA Champs are called World Champions, because the best basketball players in the world play in the NBA!!!

I've never heard it called the 'World' Super Bowl. Nonetheless, the NFL is the premiere football league in the world, as even the worst American team could beat the EuroBowl champion. Thus, by being the best football team in America, you are essentially the de facto world champion. But as I said, I've never heard it called what you said before.

We call the League(NFL) Championship the Superbowl. Never called it the World Superbowl, just the Superbowl. As to the one mentioning about it being named after a toy I'll give you a little more. It was Lamar Hunt, owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, who saw his daughter playing with the toy. He asked her what it was and she said it was a Super Ball. He then suggested teh name of Superbowl for the League Championship game and there you go. As to this World Champions thing, well that just recently started with Football. For the longest time they were the Superbowl Champions. I blame it on Sports Illistrated. I think they are the ones who started this promotion of calling the Superbowl Champions the World Champions.

its not only played in the us its played in australia, canada, and in europe but those are minor leagues the best football players are in the nfl and sense they dont play it on many other continents they are the world champs and they dont call it the world super bowl. its called the SUPER BOWL. and the world series is called that because when they named all the best players were in north america playing in the major leagues now that it has spread globally but still most of the best players are in america even the japanese best are coming over ichiro, hideki matsui, kaz matsui.....
