We fault the German public for not rising up against Hitler...so why don't we hear more about the Arab public rising up to condemn terrorism? Should they be allowed to whine, "But it's haaaaaard. I might get hurt if I speak up"?

An outstanding question.

Both Germany in the 1930's and today's Islamic "street" are examples of "mob mentality": a comforting blend of passive aggression, outright aggression and a sense of belonging to some larger, long awaited justice.

Unlike pre WWII Germany, Arab and other Islamic fundamentalist communities lack the guiding "light" of a single charismatic leader. Of course this is the very soul of terrorism. More akin to the American war for Independence than the Nazi regime (even George Washington wasn't a pop star 'til after the war).

Can individuals speak out?

Would you?

Of the millions of Muslims in this world perhaps a thousand are responsible for the outrages that have rocked our illusions of safety. Of that thousand, perhaps one hundred or less have the mentality, training and dark talents required to craft a hand full of young, angry thugs into a dangerous entity. But terrorists, like cockroaches, are exceptionally agile, small, sensitive to light and capable of hiding in the most unlikely places; surviving on crumbs and a sense of mission.

The only hope for a lasting peace with those very few who wage war with us is to understand their motivations from their very brains and spines; to see the world through their eyes. Then apply attractive alternatives to death and hatred.

Fire With Fire will not win this fight. No army nor all the martial technology available to the world's only superpower can stamp these cockroaches into non-viability.

If the United Sates and/or Britain had a truly sophisticated Intelligence system in the 30's the rise of Hitler could have been prevented so softy and surely we'd hardly recognize his name today.

And yes; individuals DO "speak out". Then they are forced to watch as their wife is raped, their children are hacked to death and their home is burned to embers.

"Haaaaaard?"

You fvcking bet.
