every year movie tickets cost more, more people are born to buy them, and theatres built to see them, its a matter of time.
its all about how you calculate it also, in one way "gone with the wind" wasn't rivaled by titanic except by modern ticket prices.in its long theatrical run it would have made ,in today's dollars, several billion.
you never know what's around the corner that can capture the public's conciousness.

Box office records...come on! What was the price of a movie twenty, thirty, forty years ago? Titanic has already been beaten a hundred times over by profit within its time. A billion dollars today is a thousand dollars yesterday. The movie, itself, is unmemorable which is the worst a movie or an experience can be.

Some day some blockbuster will beat Titanic, but Titanic at $1.8 billion worldwide is so far ahead of any other films, that it is hard to imagine right now...BUT
if you adjust for inflation (real worth of dollars from past to present terms) then Titanic is only third overall after Gone with the Wind and Snow White

I'm sure they'll be a movie in the future that will probably beat it...but it'll probably be a while since Hollywood's been coming out with some pretty lame movies.

Hmmm, good question. You never know. I does happen though. I believe ET was the highest grossing film at one point but eventually got kicked off of that throne. Anything can happen.

I have no idea if the record would be broken unless something exciting would hit theatres, if it was very anticipating and has a good premise to the movie.

This is coming from your perspective on movies. It was a good movie, I'll give it that, but nothing special.
